BG 3.42
TRANSLATION
The senses are said to be superior to the body; the mind is superior to the senses; the intelligence is superior to the mind; and the self is superior to the intelligence.
EXPLANATION
The hierarchy of the inner world. Body < Senses < Mind < Intelligence < Self. Each level is 'superior' in the sense of being more fundamental, more controlling, and less visible. Desire operates at the level of the senses; it must be understood through the mind; discriminated by intelligence; and finally transcended from the level of the Self. You cannot defeat desire by willpower at the same level where desire operates (mind). You must rise to the next level (intelligence and then Self) to achieve genuine freedom from it. This verse is the practical map for the inner work.
