Bhagavad Gita · Chapter 2 · Verse 20
BG 2.20
The soul is never born, never dies. It has not come from anywhere, it will not go anywhere. It is unborn, eternal, ever-existing, and ancient. It is not slain when the body is slain.
na jāyate mriyate vā kadācin nāyaṃ bhūtvā bhavitā vā na bhūyaḥ | ajo nityaḥ śāśvato 'yaṃ purāṇo na hanyate hanyamāne śarīre ||
Sanskrit / Transliteration
TRANSLATION
The soul is never born nor dies at any time. It has not come into being, does not come into being, and will not come into being. It is unborn, eternal, ever-existing, and primeval. It is not slain when the body is slain.
EXPLANATION
This is the definitive statement about the nature of the soul. The atman transcends time — no past, present, or future can touch it. Weapons, fire, water, wind — none affect it. When we truly understand this, fear of death, loss, and failure dissolves completely.
